Men and women should be considered as just humans who are capable of any level of education, sports, efficiency of accomplishments, emotions etc leaving the biological parameters aside. 39. Media portrayal of men and women has drawn common concerns among all worldwide for long. There has been a wide range of discussion on its negative or positive portrayal. This discussion has grown wider with the media choices that have bought benefits as well as challenges. Inspite of growing gender awareness and more females in media, the mainstream print media has still been using female images and particularly the glamorous pictures of celebrities for promoting soaps shampoo and other beauty related items. Whereas men are in more for promotion of cars, bikes etc.

  51. The male chauvinism hovers over the media, advertisement in particular which is a reflection of the gender stereotype that has set so deep that even work ethics are compromised. Why adverts for grocery must feature women? Answer is obvious its the collective conscious is still discriminating on the basis of gender. Why adverts for SUVs feature males only? Why must noodles feature kids and mom? Do transgender not consume grocery? Do men not relish noodles? Can't women drive SUVs? Having said that, I must share that the change has begun. The one in which a mentally tough girl changing the flat tyre of the car ,the other in which a mother training her son are silver linings signaling the change has begun. Let's hope the age-old stereotype gives way to gender equity. - Yogesh Singla

Women shown in ads are too often "only housewives;" stupid or incompetent; dependent on men; decorative or sex objects; passive; and not involved in making major decisions. which is wrong and that is what the new generation learns. 100. A recent ad of a deo for men which can be last long even during heavy sweating.. showing that only men can do tough work to sweat more, but not women.
While in ads related to food and nutrition of a family, females had to lead the ad, showing that females are the caretakers of health of family.
So, it’s a need of an hour to understand the meaning of gender, which is not related to only women and transgenders rather it’s a public issue. And since the media plays a major role in distribution of different roles to different gender, so showing a change in roles of men and women in ads could widely change the thinking of people.

    ReplyDelete
  106. yes, yet a long way to go to overcome the social taboos. But, I can't ignore the companies and the media who are constantly striving for gender inclusion, for example Brooke Bond Red Label tea turns prejudice into acceptance. The advertisement is showing a transgender serving tea, at a traffic signal when it is heavily raining. Moreover, one of the veteran actress, Sarita Joshi is spreading positivism.
I strongly believe that one must learn to accept and appreciate the positive side of the society, no matter how less/small it maybe. And, that will always supersede the negativity anywhere.

In many advertisement women are portrayed as showcase.

    ReplyDelete

  119. All Genders must be rtreated equally

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  126. Though we do try to break the shackles of stereotypes, we still find women centric roles for homely/ child oriented. most of male supremacy is shown in professional arena

    ReplyDelete
  127. Gender stereotype is prevalent in most of the ads I have seen recently. Usually, women are shown as feminine, and they are mostly present in the ads related to beauty products, whereas men are shown in the ads related to intellectual things. But having said that, a shift can be seen in some recent ads. For example- Cadbury remade one of their old ad and showed a guy in the position of a woman. But how much these ads would be accepted by the public is still a very big question.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Yes I too feel the same, the way gender role portrayed in ads its wrong

    ReplyDelete
  129. It will take a long long time to change the mentality of society if we start today.
People don't trust the ability of a female driver. Men usually crack jokes on them.
In TV Ads we can see wemen doing multitasking so they need health drink. Ads never show a man doing household chores. Our kids are growing seeing all this so they assume women are meant for taking care of home and kids.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Yes this is true. We really need to adopt gender inclusive approach in all schools and classrooms and must ensure gender equality among all the students. This discrimination and stereotyped mentality has been going since centuries and we are addressing it by the name of "Parampara" but we need to change it for new society and new development.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  132. It is a pity that even in 21st century the advertisements are showing gender discrimination

    ReplyDelete
  133. Even in the 21st century we have not changed our outlook even if we say that gender discrimination happens. The change should occur from our houses only then the society will change.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Tv advertisements have traditionally focused on stereotypes of women cooking delicious meals while their husbands come home tired. Though there have been recent changes with advertising on gender neutral things like recent Cadbury advertisement.

    ReplyDelete
  135. We see still same old thinking in advertising

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  137. The Ad for Scooty, had a good tagline, why do boys have all the fun? There is a shift of course in the process.

    ReplyDelete
  138. MOST OF THE ADVERTISEMENTS DEMONSTRATE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MALE AND FEMALE JOBS. NOWHERE IT IS FOUND THE TRANSGENDER DOING ANY ADVERTISEMENT. THESE GENDER BIASED ADS SHOULD BE STRICTLY DEALT WITH .

    ReplyDelete
  139. Unless equality of gender is attained by the society, progress and peace will not reach the desired levels. Men and women should be considered as just humans who are capable of any level of education, sports, efficiency of accomplishments, emotions etc leaving the biological parameters aside. No specific choices or roles should be imposed based on genders and this change can be brought about only if gender equality starts from an early stage.

  140. Kinder joy is a chocolate product, famous among children. In the advertisement, they show a pink kinder joy package for the girls and a blue one for the boys. Moreover, the gifts opened by the girl are generally barbie dolls, rings and others which are considered for girls only. And for boys, they put gifts like cars, superheroes, airplanes, transformers, and so on. This shows the gender preference and exploit the very idea of equality and freedom of choice.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Look up popular advertisements in both print and non-print media

    ReplyDelete
  142. Yes. Especially in media woman is included even in exclusive men products. She is considered show object. Sad that this percolates down our children. Truly biased. Hard to see woman doing car ad. It is always men.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Plenty of TV advertisements have shown Gender biased prejudices. For a baby care or any kitchen related thing or any cooking related advertisement they show only women whereas for a bike car or any corporate jobs they prefer men doing it which shows discrimination.
